What Purpose Are These Guidelines Designed For?
Eating Disorders are a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in young people, particularly young
women. Even when sufferers recover they may suffer long term health problems as a result of their illness.

Eating Disorders Epidemiology
Approximately 60,000 people may have Anorexia Nervosa or Bulimia Nervosa at any one
time in the UK.
One in 10-20 sufferers are male.
An average G.P. list includes approximately 2,000 patients at any one time and is likely to
include 1-2 patients with Anorexia Nervosa, 18 patients with Bulimia Nervosa and up to
10% of female adolescents using harmful weight reduction techniques.
